Final Exhibition at The Space: 'Turn of Events' by Magnhild Opdøl curated by Maeve Mulrennan

Cork Contemporary Project Space is delighted to announce its last exhibition in its current space. ‘Turn of Events’ is a solo exhibition by Norwegian born, Dublin based artist Magnhild Opdøl. It is curated by Galway Arts Centre’s Visual Arts Officer Maeve Mulrennan. ‘Turn of events’ opens at 6pm on Wednesday 11th august in The Space, Top Floor, 7 South Mall, cork city. The exhibition runs until Friday 20th august.

The main body of Magnhild Opdøl’s recent work is an investigation into the nature of death. Everything has its’ time: after death all that remains is documentation or the memory of the person, the place or object. This new series of works deals with the idea of the end as the beginning, giving a new lineage to the images and objects that are created, where the past stops a new story begins.

For the artist, pencil and paper is a pure and poetic way to approach new matters, allowing her to get close to the subjects that she is working with. All of her work can be seen as a form of drawing, from sculptures to works on walls. The other work in taxidermy allows Opdøl to bring back once dead animals to life by placing them in a new light, giving them a new tale to tell in their sculptural form. Behind every sculptural piece there is a personal history, they are things the artist has grown up with, cared for and lived with. Dead things intrigue Opdøl, not the act of death but the object before and after the fact. There is an inherent beauty contained in something so sad and dark in death. Opdøl wishes to capture the essence of this beauty in her work. In John Hutchinson’s book ‘The Bridge’ (2008) he describes beauty as
“(It is) deeper, clearer, and more substantial. Beauty is normally only revelled by an attitude of detachment and affectionate attention. It is not inherent in an object, nor is it projected. Beauty lies in oneness, shared by the maker, the object, and the viewer.”p8

As the artist gets further away from her home in rural Norway, she perceives things about the country and its culture more objectively, and the Scandinavian sense of humour seeps into her work. Some pieces aim to make you smile at first but there is a twist in the tail before the ‘truth’ is revealed.

Magnhild Opdøl holds a BA and an MFA (Painting) from NCAD. She has exhibited extensively in Scandinavia and Ireland, in both group and solo projects. Her next exhibitions include a group exhibition in the RHA and a solo exhibition in Galway Arts Centre.

An interactive Art Installation which constructs a crossword with purely visual aids, Selected Artists will create site specific work to build a labyrinth of two and three dimensional crossword clues, The viewer will be invited to solve the puzzle over the duration of the exhibition. This Summer, Cork Contemporary Projects will facilitate the occupation of disused shop fronts by artists working in range of mediums over a three-week period along a prescribed city centre route.

The Store Front Project will also include other off-site events which question the social perceptions between fine art, street art, music and performance.

CCP are currently accepting submissions. Proposals concerned with site specific, performance and multi media will be given preference

The film follows Sam, ( Sam Rockwell ) a lonely lunar excavator worker, as he nears the end of his contract on the moon. After an accident he wakes to find he is not alone.

Moon questions ideas of Identy and Human Emotion and the effect technology has on them.

A big thanks to tony, ger, mike and everyone who attended the tony desmond show/boon closing party. We were overwhelmed with the turnout and had one of the best nights in the space so far.

'The Tony Desmond Show' was also the unofficial closing party for The Boon Tea Room and featured Performance, Poetry, Stories and Music and a 50euro 1st Prize for the winner of The Tony Desmond ‘University of Life’ challenge. The Space would also like to thank Michael Foy & Gearld Heffernan for their hilarious live commentary via skype.

Rosalind Murray, the featured performance artist Saturday 23rd January at The Space as part of a series of events organised for 'The Boon Tea Room' exhibition.

Rosalind Murray mixes performance, sound, writing and drawing in her work. Recently graduated with an MFA from Rhode Island School of design, she attended Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture where she began a numer of touring projects. She has exhibited in Ireland, Europe and the US, and was recently selected for East West Emerging Artists, COCA Seattle, Curated by Christina Connet and the UCLA Wight Biennial 2008, Collaboration as process and form, LA. Rosalind creates performances in and for specific locations. For more samples of work including sound work

“The Hyperbolic Crochet Coral Reef is a worldwide project that marries mathematics,
marine biology, handicraft, community art practice and environmental consciousness raising. People all over the world - from London and New York to Capetown - are
collectively crocheting coral reefs, a woolly testimony to the disappearing wonder of
living reefs that are being devastated by global warming.”

The Science Gallery, Trinity College, Dublin

This Saturday 16th January The Space will host a day of activity based on the community project 'Hyperbolic Coral Reef Crochet' between 11.30am and 5.30pm, a ‘Sit and Stitch’ session, where people can attend workshops and talks. There will also be a display of Crocheted Coral. There are 3 sections to the Irish Crocheted Coral Reef, and we need people to crochet for all three, Workshops will be given throughout the day by Orla Breslin.

This workshop is free admission and is open to everyone. No booking required -just show up early with crochet needle and some yarn and plastic bags.

Teas, Coffees and sweet treats available throughout the day -Hope to see you there.

Having finally recovered from the flash floods and icy weather now synonomous with a Cork Christmas & New Years, The Space has once again opened it's doors on the top floor of 7 South Mall with a new exhibition and would like to begin by extending an open invitation to the public and a huge thank you to everyone who attended the launch party for this month's Space project: The Boon Tea Room.

We received an overwhelming response to this January's open call and would like to thank all applicants for their interest and support in the show.

The concept for the Boon is to transform The Space into an informal art cafe / art shop which operates mainly as a meeting point, performance space and forum for creative discussion and collaboration. The featured artists, collectives, poets and projects programmed for the month will act as a catalyst for this environment.

The Launch night featured battery operated trad experiment The Shmell, Corks finest guerrilla open mic regulars and a live acoustic set by Seamus O' Connor against a backdrop of snugs, chats and tea.

The show will be open to the public from Tuesday to Saturday between 11.30am and 5.30pm until the 30th of January and will host a series of events including, film screenings, artists talks, workshops, performances, poetry and much more. Details will be announced soon but join the mailing list above and check the blog regularly for details and updates on month's line-up.

"Abandonded Gingerbread House Building Sites is a site-specific project I made for my show, everything is as it seems to be, at The Space in Cork City.

When the global economy unravelled last year the Irish countryside was left with a lot of empty, unsold, and unfinished housing estates. This holiday season I thought it would be nice to celebrate these unique landscapes by making them into picturesque gingerbread-house decorations that will rot and eventually be thrown out much like the unfinished housing estates themselves."

Cork Contemporary Projects will be transforming their Gallery The Space into a hub of events for three weeks of January 2010. Starting the New Year with a series of Artist Talks, Professional Practice Lectures, Film nights, Art and Music Performances’, Poetry, Readings and ultimately providing a space to converse and relax with peers in a cosy environment.

Cork Contemporary Projects are currently seeking proposals from established and emerging Artists, Musicians, Designers, Poets, Sociologists, Co-operatives and Collectives interested in the platform for talks/experiments/performances/exhibits in January 2010 for the project The Boon Tea Room.

Alannah Byrne recently graduated from the CIT Crawford College of Art & Design and is exhibiting at The Space as winner of the Art Trail graduate award ’09.
Through the exploration and development ideas by the use of various mediums her work demonstrates the existing struggle between the old and the new, sculpture and video, line and form with a view to making evident their shared dialogue.
In her work importance is placed on the process rather than the end result. Repetition is an important re-occurring theme in the artist’s work as a means of recognising people’s need for the ritual and the prevalence of such in present times.

'Chalk it Down' An Exhibition of Contemporary Drawing

Cork Contemporary Projects are happy to finally announce the opening of 'The Space Gallery' located in the heart of Cork city. As many of you know, CCP have been continuously applying for grant aid throughout the last year to set up a new artist-led space in the city centre to be used as both a gallery and studios. This financial support was not granted and so CCP continued with their efforts to utilise free space in the city, focusing their interests on finding a creative space for emerging and mid-career artists to exhibit.

The first of these new projects was 'The Eviction Show' at 129 Sundays Well Rd, a collaborative artistic intervention with a residential space. The exhibition featured work by each if the five members of CCP.

In recent months, CCP artists have worked independently and collaboratively on a number of projects including arts festival The Avant, music festival Feile le Cheile, artists in residency programme Paperback Project and stage production The Factory Girls.

The Space Gallery is located on the top floor of No. 7 South Mall, Cork city and opens Friday 2nd October with 'Chalk it Down' an exhibition of contemporary drawing.

Cork Contemporary Projects (CCP) are a new arts collective based in Cork city with a strong focus on collaboration between the disciplines of art, architecture and design.

As the title suggests, the venue is currently home to two members of CCP and is intended to be
renovated and leased out to new tenants. The decision to seize this transition period as an
opportunity to exhibit has been quite recent and so CCP intend for the show to be the result of an open studio, highlighting the fact that there are always opportunities to make and show work, even when you’re being evicted.

Cork Contemporary Projects are currently carrying out a feasibility study for a premises located in Cork city centre which will incorporate 20 studio spaces and a large gallery with an adjacent boardroom for hire to architects and graphic designers.

Each studio space will be approximately 3m x 3m. Members will have 24 hour access to their space. Cork Contemporary Projects has an open policy to all art and design disciplines.
